40 to 60 shots fired on Meadowvale – residents
A large number of Vicksburg residents heard several shots fired on the north end of the City on Friday night.
Just before 9:30 p.m., reports ranging from 40 to 60 shots were heard from Fort Hill to the eastern reaches of the City limits, according to several people in the city.
In a press release, Investigator Jerrold Hayes of the Vicksburg Police Department stated, “On Friday, May 03, 2024, at about 9:20 p.m., Officers with the Vicksburg Police Department responded to the 300 block of Meadowvale Drive about a shots fired call. Upon the arrival of Officers, multiple residences and a vehicle were reported to have received damage due to gunfire. Several spent shell casings consistent with different caliper weapons were processed and collected from the scene. At this time, there have been no injuries reported and this remains an open and active investigation. If anyone has information relating to this incident, please contact the Vicksburg Police Department, (601)-636-2511.”
This is one of several incidents in that area over the past few years. An altercation in that same area resulted in four arrests in 2019, an aggravated assault in 2020, a stolen weapon in 2021, and a burglary in December 2021. A similar incident occurred in the exact same area in 2021, and an MHP vehicle was shot a block or two away in August 2022.
Several spent shell casings consistent with different caliper weapons could indicate a shootout or multiple shooters. Due to the ambiguous nature of the report and the leadership of the Vicksburg Police Department’s desire to keep information from the public, it is unclear if this was a shootout.
The Vicksburg Police Department has yet to release any information about a violent event in the downtown area around 11:30 p.m. last night.
