It takes a while for a tornado to be confirmed because of the legal implications for insurance and, in extreme cases, federal disaster declarations. Federal disaster declarations open the door to financial relief and federal assistance in recovery. A team of trained professionals has a standardized process to determine if the tornadic activity occurred in a location.
