43 Tornadoes Hit Mississippi on April 18th

Three more tornadoes have been confirmed from the storms on the 18th bringing the total number of confirmed tornadoes on that day to 43.  So far this year Mississippi has suffered 75 tornadoes.  The record year for tornadoes was 2008 with 109 confirmed.

Vicksburg suffered three tornadoes on that date and luckily no one was seriously injured.  Memories and images of that day will stay with us for a long time.

It takes a while for a tornado to be confirmed because of the legal implications for insurance and, in extreme cases, federal disaster declarations.  Federal disaster declarations open the door to financial relief and federal assistance in recovery.  A team of trained professionals has a standardized process to determine if the tornadic activity occurred in a location.  This includes radar information, recorded video if available, local reports and damage assessments.
