9-year-old succumbs to gunshot injury. Mother faces charges

Canton, Miss. – A 9-year-old was pronounced deceased on Thursday after his 2-year-old sister accidentally shot him in the head with a gun found under a car seat.

According to the initial report by WAPT, The mother is facing charges in the incident which involved her 9-year-old son being shot in the head after her children were left unattended in a vehicle. Their 10-year-old sibling witnessed the events which took place inside the vehicle. In total, three children, ages two, nine and ten, were left unattended for an unspecified amount of time while the mother and her boyfriend were inside of a residence.

After the children were left unattended, one of them, a 2-year-old girl, found a loaded gun under a car seat. Upon gaining access to the weapon, the gun discharged and resulted in her 9-year-old brother receiving a gunshot wound to the head.  The child was taken to University of Mississippi Medical Center where he was undergoing treatment for the tragic incident.

It was announced that the boy succumbed to the injury on Thursday, after reportedly being in stable condition the day before.

The other siblings are currently being cared for by their grandmother, while the mother faces charges of neglect. The case is to be presented to the Madison County District Attorney where more charges may be filed against the mother.

The identities of those involved have yet to be released.
