A Day at Champion Hill

May 14, 2011 – A Day at Champion Hill. An all-day battlefield event will take place on the grounds of the Champion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, located on Champion Hill Road four miles west of Bolton. The event, sponsored by the Champion Heritage Foundation, will commemorate the 148th Anniversary of the Battle of Champion Hill.  Numerous events will take place during the day including opening ceremonies at 10:00 a.m. on the grounds of the original Champion House, the site where U. S. Grant made his headquarters. Highlights of the event will include: a book dedication Leaves: The Diary of Elizabeth Meade Ingraham by Rebecca Drake and Sue Moore; the unveiling of a new historic marker; book signings by eight prominent Civil War authors; and lunch on the grounds featuring Matilda Champion’s original recipe for Buttermilk Pie.
