Just after 9 a.m. Saturday morning, Vicksburg Police Officer Matt Barnes discovered a dog in a car that had been abandoned on Smedes Street.

Residents of the area reported that the vehicle had been there since late yesterday from either a mechanical or fuel issue.

Warren County Emergency Management Director John Elfer responded with a door unlocking tool.

The dog appeared to be about 6 months old, healthy and well trained.

The City’s Animal Control personnel have taken the dog to the shelter.

The owner/operator of the vehicle arrived at the scene where he was given some gas and directions.

It is unclear at this time if any charges will be pursued against the vehicle owner or operator
