Johnny Sanders (Port Gibson Police Department)

Shortly after the story on Johnny Sanders escaping from police custody, a joint effort between Port Gibson Police Department, Claiborne County Sheriff Department, Mississippi Highway Patrol and Vicksburg Police Department were able to take him back into custody.

On Monday, two Vicksburg residents were taken into custody for an armed robbery which took place in Port Gibson on Saturday.

“Saturday morning, just after 2 a.m., there was an armed robbery committed inside of Port Gibson city limits by Johnny Sanders and Mary Myles,” stated Port Gibson Police Chief Russell Dorsey during an interview on Monday.

Dorsey stated that the investigation into the crime uncovered a Vicksburg address. Port Gibson police, collaborating with Vicksburg police, arrested Sanders and Myles just before 10 a.m. in the 1300 block of Fillmore Street.

At around 5 p.m. on Monday, Shaun Cooper, Sr., Dispatcher for the Port Gibson Police Department, took to social media and announced Sanders’ escape.

Not long after the story broke, at 7:16 p.m., Claiborne County Sheriff Department went live on social media. A joint operation from numerous agencies worked in tandem to recapture Sanders.

Dorsey reached out to us at the Vicksburg Daily News to state that numerous phone calls came in after our escape story hit the internet. “My phone started ringing left and right,” Dorsey said, laughing. “I just want to personally thank the Claiborne County Sheriff Department and Vicksburg Police Department, they also came to help and assisted.” Dorsey added that Mississippi Highway Patrol also provided assistance in the recapture of Sanders.
