VICKSBURG, MS – On Sunday, October 20, at 3:00 p.m. members of the Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., will host A Seat At the Table: Honoring Shirley Chisholm at the Ardis T. Williams Sr Auditorium.

The event will highlight the legacy of the Honorable Shirley Chisholm, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the first African American to earn election to Congress, and the first Black woman of a major party to run for a presidential nomination.

In 1972, Shirley Chisholm made history as the first Black woman to run for president of the United States, seeking the Democratic Party’s nomination. A congresswoman from New York and a trailblazer for women and marginalized groups in politics, Chisholm ran under the slogan “Unbought and Unbossed,” emphasizing her independence and commitment to social justice. Though she faced significant obstacles, including racism and sexism, her campaign energized many marginalized communities and challenged the political establishment. While she did not win the nomination, Chisholm’s candidacy paved the way for future generations of women and people of color in American politics.

The event will highlight the legacy of the Honorable Shirley Chisholm, a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the first African American to earn election to Congress, and the first Black woman of a major party to run for a presidential nomination. Dr. Toriano Holloway, Superintendent, Vicksburg Warren School District, will serve as the guest panelist. The guest entertainer will be Christian HipHop Artist F.L.Y.

A Seat At the Table: Honoring Shirley Chisholm is free and open to the public. The Ardis T. Williams Sr Auditorium is located at 901 Monroe Street, Vicksburg, Mississippi.
