LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State men’s basketball team powered through a UAPB late-game rally to defeat the Golden Lions 70-67 Saturday evening.
With the victory, the Braves improve to 11-11 on the season and 8-2 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Arkansas – Pine Bluff falls to 10-13 on the season and 6-4 in conference play.
Jeremiah Kendall led the Braves in scoring with 18 points and seven rebounds. The Bronx, N.Y. native went 7-for-14 from the field and 4-5 at the free throw line.
Trevin Wadealso contributed double-digits to the Alcorn offense. The graduate guard went 6-for-7 from the floor, including 1-for-1 in three-point range, and 3-for-5 at the line for 16 points.
As a team, the Braves shot 44.8 percent from the field, 28.6 percent beyond the arc, and 77.9 percent at the free throw line. Alcorn outrebounded UAPB 43-24 and scored more points from the bench 32-17.
Two full minutes ticked off the clock before UAPB broke the scoring drought with a three-point jumper from Shaun Doss, Jr.
Dominic Brewton answered for the Braves, scoring two to cut the Golden Lions’ lead to 3-2.
The teams traded points for several minutes, before a layup by Wade at the 10-minute mark started a scoring run for Alcorn. By the end of the first half, the Braves had a 13-point lead entering the break with a 36-23 advantage.
Coming back from, Alcorn’s offense was relentless. The Braves scored an onslaught of two-pointers to take a 24-point lead (51-27) with 13 minutes remaining in the contest.
After a media timeout and with under 10 minutes remaining, the Golden Lions fought back within striking distance of the Braves’ lead. AC Curry, a junior guard for Arkansas – Pine Bluff, caught fire scoring 15 of his 18 points in the closing minutes.
Alcorn seemed unable to stop the Golden Lions, but the Braves defense kicked in just in time to grab the 70-67 victory.
