Alcorn women’s basketball outpaces Grambling, 58-52

GRAMBLING, La. – Destiny Brown hit her sixth double-double of the season as the Alcorn State women’s basketball team outpaced Grambling State University to improve to 8-12 on the season and 4-5 in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. The Lady Braves topped the Tigers 58-52 on the road Monday inside the Fredrick C. Hobdy Assembly Center.

Brown recorded a season-high 18 rebounds, a career-high with Alcorn, including seven offensive boards and 11 defensive.

Alcorn got a game-high 16 points from Tyginae Wright, who scored 13 in the first half. Zy’Nyia White was also a significant contributor to the Lady Braves’ success, with 14 points and nine rebounds.

ASU used pressure defense throughout the game, putting up seven blocks and forcing 14 turnovers, which included six steals. The Lady Braves were also more effective in shooting, hitting 35.6 percent from the field and 40.0 percent in three-point range. Grambling saw only 27.4 percent from the floor, with just 6.7 from beyond the arch.

Alcorn started strong, hitting 20 points in the first quarter while holding the Tigers to just nine. Despite scoring just nine points in the second, the Lady Braves maintained their success throughout the game and never lost the lead.

Alcorn Basketball returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 4, when it hosts Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m., with the game broadcasting on WPRL 91.7 FM.
