Vicksburg and Warren County are directly in the line of an ice storm expected to arrive Sunday night or Monday morning. Temperatures will plummet into the low teens and maybe even single digits during the storm and the following day. Low temperatures will allow icy conditions to remain throughout Monday and Tuesday.

“We’re going to get something and it’s going to be cold” said a cautious John Elfer, director of Warren County’s Emergency Management.

A meteorologist with the National Weather Service stated, “We will meet ice storm criteria Sunday night and Monday. It is a significant threat and it’s a close call. Conditions could change causing sleet instead of ice. But it would be 1 to 3 inches of sleet.”

Driving on icy roads is dangerous in any environment, but in the South where snow and ice are rare events it makes driving extremely hazardous. Trees will give way under the weight of ice and power will be lost for many people in Warren County.

Another winter event is in the forecast for Thursday, meaning conditions may remain dangerous for several days and into the weekend.

A significant winter weather event is expected Monday into Monday night. Significant ice and sleet accumulations will result in dangerous travel conditions as well as downed trees and power lines.  The wind chill Monday is expected to be in the single digits.

Please make sure to plan ahead, only travel when absolutely necessary and prepare pipes, pets and automobiles for the freezing temperatures.
