Arson suspect’s death is being investigated as a suicide

A woman who was involved in an arson investigation in Fayette, Mississippi has now died.

Mary Wyatt was questioned by Fayette PD earlier this week about a home that burned down on Shannon Street that belonged to her husband. Earlier this week, Wyatt was found dead in Port Gibson where her death is being investigated as a suspected suicide by the Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office.

Before her death, Wyatt made a full confession to Fayette PD Investigators of her involvement in the arson which ruined a home and a church van that was parked alongside the house.

One person has been arrested for the arson charge and the case is still under investigation.

The Fayette Police Department along with the State of Mississippi Fire Marshal’s Office is currently conducting an arson investigation in Fayette, MS/Jefferson County.

On April 14, 2023, at or around 6:40 p.m. several 911 calls were received in reference to a residential fire at 260 Shannon Street, the home of Mr. AJ Wyatt.

When the fire department and officers arrived at the scene, the home was fully engulfed in flames. Mr.Wyatt and his wife Mary Wyatt were not home at the time of the fire.

Investigations have led to the arrest of 65-year-old Charles E. Oliver, who was arrested shortly after the incident and is currently being charged with Arson. Investigations are ongoing.
