Bear cub hit near Eagle Lake is doing better, according to source

Sources close to Vicksburg Daily News have provided an update on the condition of the bear cub hit on Highway 465 near Eagle Lake on Aug. 6.

According to the information given to us, the bear cub is doing better, overall. Its hind legs were hurt from the crash but he is recovering.

The information provided also states the zoo will be going through the state to see if they can keep the cub for the bear exhibit.

It was noted the cub only weighed 18 lbs and should have been more than 30 lbs.

What happened?

Saturday afternoon, on Aug. 6, at about 4 p.m., a driver on 465 near Eagle Lake struck a bear cub on the roadway.

The driver stopped and went back to find the bear cub, which initially did not appear to survive the hit. MDWFP was contacted along with Warren County Sheriff’s deputies.

Before officials could arrive, the driver alerted them the bear had survived the impact and was coming out of it.

Lee Harvey with MDWFP took control of the scene and established a safe perimeter from the cub. It was unclear if the mother was still in the area or if the injured cub would lash out. Several people were asked to move from the area.
