The Mississippi Department of Education has announced the selection of 11 primary schools as Mississippi Emerging Science of Reading Schools for the academic year of 2023-24. Among these schools, two were recognized from the Vicksburg-Warren School District.

This prestigious acknowledgment is given to those schools that have ensured their teachers are proficient in the science of reading, exhibited a shift in their instructional approaches, and fostered an educational environment dedicated to nurturing competent, skilled readers from kindergarten through third grade.

“We applaud these schools for seeking and receiving this designation, which demonstrates their commitment to implementing the science of reading and ensuring their students receive optimal literacy instruction,” said Dr. Ray Morgigno, interim state superintendent of education. “Such designations support Mississippi remaining a national leader in literacy and continued growth for students.”

Every spring, all K-5 schools across Mississippi are encouraged to submit their application for this science of reading recognition. In the 2021-22 academic year, as well as in 2022-23, seven primary schools were awarded this designation. To maintain this status, schools are required to reapply.

Starting Tuesday, Aug. 8, MDE’s Literacy Leadership Team is scheduled to visit each of the recognized campuses to commemorate this achievement.
