The Big Blue Indoor Percussion group is returning to Vicksburg today at 4 p.m.

They have been competing in the largest competition of its type, the WGI World Championship in Dayton, Ohio and finished 11th overall in the competition.

WGI stands for Winter Guard International. It is a performing arts association and governing body for competitions of this type.

In a post to social media, they said:

“It was a long, but extremely rewarding day. Mr. Collins and our Indoor Percussion group made history this weekend with not only the first ever semi-finalist performance at World Championships, but the first ever appearance in PSA finals.
This is a huge accomplishment for our program. The members had to deal with the cold and rain, weather delays, and traveling to multiple locations today to earn 11th place overall out of more than 40 groups in their division. Groups travel from all over the country to compete on the biggest stage for this activity. We couldn’t be more proud of our hard working students and Mr. Collins on all their hard work and representing Big Blue, Warren Central High School, and the VWSD extremely well.”
Their performance was titled “Ward 27.” Set in a mental institution, the performers explored the effects of being in a psychiatric ward. “Acting skills were at their highest as members of the ensemble screamed, covered their ears and acted slightly mischievous at times for contrast. The pit provided an eerie soundtrack to the battery’s intensity, ending with an impactful lesson on the importance of mental health.”
