BOMA approves resolution to close Riverfront Park, leaves final decision to WCBOS
A resolution to close Riverfront Park was approved on Monday by the Board of Mayor and Aldermen, leaving the final decision to the Warren County Board of Supervisors.
On Monday, the Board of Mayor and Aldermen met and approved a resolution that would close Riverfront Park and accept a donation of two lots near Golding Barge Lines for a new park site.
Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. stated that engineers could not guarantee the city would not have to spend any more money on the park. With the potential costs to mitigate issues at the current location and the criminal activity in the area, Flaggs recommended the donation of land be accepted and used for a better park location.
In 2018, erosion issues caused the park to close. Again, in 2020, the park was closed due to landslides.
Riverfront Park is owned by both the city and county, with the northern section leased from the Cashman family. Both the city and county manage the park and share the costs of upkeep. The board’s resolution is scheduled to be presented to the supervisors during their Feb. 21 meeting. If approved, the park will close.
