Reports of a loud “boom” heard from Brookhaven, to Port Gibson, to southern Warren County have sparked curiosity among residents. The sound was heard at around 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

Speculation has ranged from a jet being shot down, to a launch of a Space X rocket in Florida. Space X did launch early this morning but at 4:52 a.m. local time.

Port Gibson Police Chief Russell Dorsey stated there was nothing found to indicate an aircraft was shot down. Dorsey did state that residents of Brookhaven had also heard the boom.

Claiborne County authorities confirmed on social media they are aware of the sound, and can only offer that the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station was not involved. They also state that local and state officials are working to investigate the cause.

As of this report, all that exists is speculation.

Vicksburg Daily News has reached out to several authorities over the area, but there is currently no consensus to its cause.

Vicksburg Daily News will stay with the story and get full confirmation on the situation.
