One man is behind bars and at least one other suspect is wanted by authorities after a shooting took place at a convenience store on Tiffentown Road Sunday night.

Sheriff Martin Pace says that deputies were dispatched to Bovina Grocery at 10:20 p.m. in response to a call that shots were fired between two vehicles in the parking lot, a black Jeep and a white pickup truck.

Investigators were able to identify the parties involved, and at 11:40 p.m., Sheriff Pace and Lt. Silento McMorris arrested John Frank Chambers at his residence on CJ Fisher Drive.

“It appears that this began as a disturbance on CJ Fisher Drive earlier,” Sheriff Pace said. “Both parties involved re-engaged in the parking lot of the business in Bovina and both parties exchanged gunfire. They shot at each other on the parking lot of an open business with customers present.”

Chambers was charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, a felony, and is being held without bond at the Warren County jail until he makes his initial appearance in court. Sheriff Pace says he expects that would be on Tuesday, however, it is ultimately up to the court.

“We have identified the owner of the black Jeep, however we have not made contact with him yet,” Sheriff Pace said. “We are still in the early stages of this investigation, so I’m not going to be able to release the other party’s name or any other details at this time. I will make more information available when it’s appropriate to do so.”

A vehicle in the parking lot sustained collateral damage during the shoot out – it was struck at least once – but the owner was not involved in the disturbance. No injuries were reported in connection to this case.
