Cable named as the 2022 VDN Head Girl’s Track Coach of the Year
Vicksburg High School’s Deatre Cable has been named as Vicksburg Daily News 2022 Head Girl’s Track Coach of the Year.
The Missy Gators had multiple athletes compete in north state and the state meet and had a successful season in 2021. In 2022, they took that success even further and secured the district 4-5A title.
“Last year we were just good but this season we got better in every meet and we’re going to continue to work on our confidence and get better,” Cable said.
After hosting both district and north state, eleven of the Missy Gators advanced to the state meet to participate in individual and team events. VHS would only continue to show improvement until the season came to an end. Nearly everyone on the roster will be returning next year.
“I’m overwhelmed with the amount of talent that I have. I have one of the best problems a coach can have, which is having more girls than I need to compete in a single event, but we still win as a team,” Cable said.
As a graduate of VHS in 1997, Cable is no stranger to hard work. She excelled in both basketball and track after moving from Canton to Vicksburg at the age of 14, when her father, Dellie C. Robinson, became the head coach of the boy’s basketball team. She is now 18 years into coaching and has led teams to both district and state titles in her tenure.
Cable learned of her selection as VDN’s Head Girl’s Track Coach of the Year earlier this week. This is her second consecutive time winning this award.
“This makes me feel good down in my soul,” Cable said jokingly. “It’s an honor to be recognized for the work that you do even though I get my happiness from them especially when they work hard but that’s my motivation to want to be a better coach for them.”
Cable leaned on her family for inspiration to keep ahead of the game.
“My dad has been one of the most influential people because he never pushed sports on his kids, but he always said that if you choose to do something, you do it to the best of your abilities and the things that you don’t know, you go and find out to make yourself better,” Cable said.
Now that the track season is over, Cable is assisting with the Missy Gators basketball team.
