Carjacking of elderly woman leads to multi-agency police chase

A carjacking of an 80-year-old woman led to a pursuit from Jackson into Clinton and Byram on Thursday, the Darkhorse Press reports.

Thursday night, David Tyler was accused of carjacking an elderly woman in Clinton. According to the report, Tyler instructed his 15-year-old nephew to assist in the crime.

After the vehicle was located, a chase ensued with Tyler’s two nephews onboard. Reports state that Tyler fired a weapon at the pursuing officers. Units with Clinton, Jackson, Terry and Byram police departments were involved in the chase. Hinds County Sheriff’s Department and Mississippi Highway Patrol Troopers also aided in the pursuit.

Police used a spike strip to finally bring Tyler to a stop in the 3400 block of Tank Road where he was taken into custody. A 9mm handgun was said to have also been found in his possession.

Pending charges against Tyler include the kidnapping of his two nephews, felony fleeing, aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and felon in possession of a firearm.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives have also been brought in on this case. Federal charges are expected to be pursued. There is no information if the 15-year-old will face any criminal charges for assisting Tyler in the carjacking.

Tyler will remain in federal custody.
