Charlie Burnell Whitten, 1945 – 2022

Charlie Burnell Whitten, 77, of Vicksburg, MS passed away Friday, Apr. 8, at his home in Vicksburg, MS. He was born Mar. 25, 1945, in Hazlehurst, MS to parents Hugh and Rushell Whitten.

Charlie married Audrey Beazley on Sep. 2, 1967, in Crystal Springs, MS. He loved his wife and family and loved spending time with them. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather “gramps.” He was also a faithful member of Immanuel Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher. He loved his church, but most importantly he loved the Lord.

Charlie served in the Army from 1968 to 1971. He was employed by Waterways Experiment Station as a Geologist from which he retired in 2009.

Charlie is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Audrey Whitten; his two daughters Charlene Ponder (Johnny Wayne) and Adrianne Taylor (Steve), son Brian Whitten, three grandsons Drew Taylor (Brookelyn), Caleb Taylor and Micah Taylor, four granddaughters Reann Ponder, Trina Ponder, Rebekah Whitten and Grace Whitten and sister Francis Keys (J.L.) and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.

He is preceded in death by his father Hugh Verner Whitten, Sr., his mother Rushell Gaddy Whitten and his older brother Hugh Verner Whitten, Jr.

Memorial services for Mr. Charlie Burnell Whitten will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Apr. 12, at Immanuel Baptist Church in Vicksburg, MS with a graveside service at Cedar Hill Cemetery after. There will also be a visitation at 1 p.m. It will be officiated by Bro. Billy Brumfield and Bro. Steve Taylor. Glenwood Funeral Home will be entrusted with the arrangements.

Pallbearers will be Caleb Taylor, Micah Taylor, Willie Keyes, Hugh Witten, III, Darren Beazley and Greg Mitchell.
