Luminarias tonight

The annual tradition of placing and lighting luminarias is happening tonight in Vicksburg.

Luminarias means paper lanterns, luminaries are set aloft.

The decades-old tradition happens in one of the oldest parts of Vicksburg with a backdrop of grand homes and prominent citizens. This includes homes on Drummond, Cherry, Chambers and Glenwood Circle. The light show is open to the public will be the featured areas to see the light show.

Stan Collins donates the sand for the event each year in honor of his wife and son who have passed away.

Cub Scout Pack #7 and Scouts BSA Troop #7 do this as a fundraiser for their organization. People in the neighborhood donate a small amount for the luminarias to be placed in front of their homes.

This year around 5000 luminaries will be placed.

Greg Sparks is one of the many adults who give of their time to assist the scouts in getting the project completed. Sparks talks about effort, that has been going on in this neighborhood for 25-30 years, in this video:

The luminarias are lit around dark. If you go please use caution, a lot of children will be out enjoying the show.
