City of Vicksburg hopeful that developers will submit last-minute proposals for Kuhn Memorial property
In June, the City of Vicksburg put out a call for developers to give a new lease on life to the old Kuhn Memorial Hospital property.
To date, the city hasn’t received any responses.
The charity hospital closed in 1989, and despite sporadic interest in redeveloping the building, it had fallen into serious disrepair. Thirty years later, saving it just wasn’t in the cards.
“It became so dilapidated that we had to change gears and demolish it,” Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs Jr. told WLBT.
The city razed the building in April of this year with the help of $460,000 from the state. The property, located at 1422 Martin Luther King Jr Blvd., is now an empty lot.
Now, the city hopes a developer can renew the 12.8-acre location.
“Hopefully, we can get a proposal out there that will be revitalization for the area and that will enhance the area,” Flaggs added. “It’ll be part of recreation, retail and housing if we can get that. It will be a win/win for the area.”
The last day to submit a proposal is Monday, Aug. 19.
