WC’s Corey Wilson Sr. named as the VDN Co-Track Coach of the Year
Warren Central High School’s Corey Wilson Sr. has received the VDN Co-Head Track Coach of the Year award, sharing it with Shaun Archer.
Wilson:
Wilson steered the Vikings to a notable season, capturing wins at both the Viking and Gator Invitationals.
“This is probably the most competitive group of guys that I have ever coached during my time here at Warren Central,” Wilson said. “In contrast, we were very fortunate to finish in the top three in almost all of our track meets this year.”
Wilson exhibited strong leadership, driving the WC team to improve and secure victories in events such as the 4X800, 4X100, 4X200 and 4X400 relays. Notably, his athlete, Jonathan Henderson, claimed a state title in 2023.
“I saw Jonathan leverage adversity into success this year,” Wilson remarked. “He had a mid-season nagging injury that could have cost him the championship this year, but he pushed through that obstacle and achieved a desired outcome. I’m very proud of his remarkable success and willingness not to be denied this year and I want to give a big thank you to Coach Aaron Stallworth for working with Johnathan these last past two years.”
Wilson is known for uplifting his team with sage advice. “I always preach to my guys, ‘Make sure your worst enemy doesn’t live between your own two ears’,” he added.
Over the past six years, Wilson coached three state champions: Jonathan Henderson (2023 High Jump), Joshua Griffin (2021 300 Intermediate Hurdles) and Jalen Glass (2019 High Jump). He acknowledges the importance of collaboration in building the program.
“I legitimately believe that this program is headed for greatness,” Wilson shared. “I would like to thank Keith Williams, Aaron Stalworth, Heather Casey, Julius Cosby, Nicole Solis and the entire Warren Central High School Viking Football Coaching Staff for their hard work, dedication and contribution to this program and its success.”
This marks the second time Wilson has received the award and expresses gratitude to those who have supported him throughout.
“I’m very grateful and humble to receive and share this phenomenal VDN Coach of the Year Award with Coach Archer,” Wilson stated. “I have been the Vikings head coach for the last six years and I have spent numerous hours helping my team make considerable strides towards success.”
“First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for putting me in this vital position. Secondly, I would like to thank my parents for making critical sacrifices that empowered me to receive a top-end education from a very distinctive university. I would also like to thank my wife Erica and my children Briana and Corey Jr., for being my number one supporters and motivators in all aspects of my coaching and family life. Finally, I would like to thank Associate Superintendent Eric Green, Athletic Director James Lewis and Athletic Coordinator Josh Morgan for giving me this immeasurable opportunity six years ago to continue this winning tradition here at Warren Central High School established by Coach Morris Johnson and Larry Tyrone Sr. back in the glory days.”
Wilson is optimistic about the upcoming 2024 season with many of his team members returning.
“We are going to be a very strong-minded, disciplined and competitive team this upcoming season with a high octane focus leaning on Daniel Williams, Ashton Wright, Rohan Caples, Stanley Doyle, Rickey Neal, Ronnie Blossom, Jonathan Henderson and Jaylen Winters.”
Wilson’s attention now turns to football, with the new season set to begin on Aug. 25.
