David Alester Moore, 1933 – 2020

David Alester Moore passed away Sunday, Feb. 9, 2020. He was 86 years old.

David was born July 14, 1933, in Coquille County, Oregon. His parents were Helen (Detwiler) Moore and Joseph Moore. Helen died when David was 4 years old. Joseph subsequently married Molly (Mildred) Hertel, and she was David’s loving stepmother until her death in 1997.

David grew up in Coos and Douglas Counties in Oregon. He was an Oregon Pioneer, with his maternal third great-grandfather and grandmother having immigrated to Oregon via the 1852 Oregon Trail. His great- grandfather was a Civil War veteran. His ancestors were Pilgrims, and many fought in the Revolutionary War.

He entered the U S Army in 1956 and was assigned to Germany in the late 1950s. He met his wife there, a German native named Hannelore Schonauer, and they married in 1959. His tours of duty took him to Germany, Vietnam and Korea. He retired at the rank of first sergeant from the 501st AG Company, 1st Armored Division in 1978. He settled in Vicksburg, Miss., in 2007 and developed a close circle of friends and acquaintances whom he enjoyed spending time with.

He is survived by his daughter Elizabeth and son Edward, Elizabeth’s children Leigh Anne, and Mira and Edward’s son Andrew.

A memorial service will follow at a later date at Dunes Memorial Chapel in Reedsport, Oregon. He will be laid to rest in the Reedsport, Oregon Masonic Cemetery with his parents.
