Delta Sigma Theta, Vicksburg Chapter crowned new Miss Jabberwock
Vicksburg, Miss –Three new queens were crowned at a talent showcase sponsored by the Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at the Ardis T. Williams, Sr. Auditorium on May 25.
Fifteen young ladies, ages 6-18, vied for the titles of “Little Miss Jabberwock,” “Junior Miss Jabberwock,” and “Miss Jabberwock.” The talent segment consisted of individual participants performing song, dance and spoken word routines. Other performances included a dance routine by the escorts and live musical selections by The Solidified Band and In Reverse.
“Jabberwock 2024 was a great success,” said Sheeneka Covington, event chairperson. “I thoroughly enjoyed working with the young ladies and young men. All of their hard work and dedication paid off.”
The top three winners were crowned by the top three winners from the 2018 Jabberwock. The event, which is typically held biennially, had been on hiatus due to ongoing Covid-19 concerns.
The program helps the chapter raise funds for scholarships and other community programming. Participants have the opportunity to grow culturally, educationally and artistically as they work towards the night of the performance.
Part pageant, part talent showcase, the title of the event derives from an imaginary creature from Lewis Carroll’s well-known fairly tale, “Alice in Wonderland” called the Jabberwock. The parts of other animals are what ultimately make the Jabberwock interesting.
The winners for this year were:
- Little Miss Jabberwock 2024 – L. King
- Junior Miss Jabberwock 2024 –M. Atkinson
- Miss Jabberwock 2024 – Z. Patten
The first Jabberwock was held by a Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Chapter in Boston in 1925. Founded at Howard University in 1913, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. is an international organization consisting of more than 300,000 members. The Vicksburg Alumnae Chapter was founded in 1976.
