Vicksburg High School football player Demarcus Johnson is gearing up for action in 2023 as he enters his final year with the Gators.

Johnson envisions 2023 as a standout year for VHS, given his significant contribution to the program’s success.

“I feel good about this year and we had some new players that came in and we’re taking them under our wings so I know they’ll adjust,” Johnson said.

Johnson has been a madman on the defensive line and proved that he can run through any offensive lineman who steps in his way. He officially became a starter as a freshman three years ago and has held it down ever since. One of his best performances was against Callaway in 2022 when he racked up eight tackles, two sacks, and a forced fumble during the second round of the playoffs.

Johnson was selected as VDN’s Defensive Player of the Year in 2022 and he plans to repeat that goal in 2023. He is currently one of the most underrated players in the state of Mississippi, but has received offers from Alcorn State University, Co-Lin, Coahoma CC, Itawamba CC and Northwest Mississippi CC.

While some might critique him based on his height, Johnson doesn’t let that deter him. On Friday nights, with all eyes on him, he consistently delivers.

“They still judge me by my size but my I’m still all power and technique and I can do what any four or five-star athlete can do,” Johnson said.

VHS is scheduled to play their opening game at home against Holmes County Central at 7 p.m. this Friday.
