One person is in custody and a Warren County Sheriff’s Deputy is being treated for injuries following a chase in southern Warren County Friday night.

Shortly before 11 p.m., a Warren County deputy initiated a traffic stop with a Grand Marquis traveling south on Fisher Ferry Road. The driver failed to yield to the deputy’s lights and siren fleeing south on Fisher Ferry.

The driver continued south on Fisher Ferry before making a U-turn just before crossing into Claiborne County and heading back north on Fisher Ferry.  The deputy continued to pursue the vehicle as other units, including Sheriff Martin Pace, raced to the area.

The driver appears to have attempted to turn onto Joyce Lane, failed to negotiate the turn and crashed the vehicle, according to Sheriff Pace.

The driver then continued to run on foot for several hundred yards with the deputy in close pursuit on foot. When the deputy caught the suspect, a struggle ensued between the deputy and the suspect.

“The suspect was attempting to overpower the deputy,” Sheriff Pace said.  “The deputy has suffered some injuries, we hope they are minor injuries. He has been transported to River Region Medical Center by Vicksburg Fire Department ambulance.  The suspect was not injured and is in route to the county jail at this time.”

The suspect will be charged with at least two felonies, felony eluding and felony assault on a police officer, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues.  The Vicksburg Daily News will bring you more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
