Warren County District 3 Supervisor Shawn Jackson

Warren County Board of Supervisor District 3 Supervisor Shawn Jackson filed paperwork Monday to run for Mayor of the City of Vicksburg.

“I believe Vicksburg is ready for a change,” Jackson said. “We currently could be better, and some of the great things the city has to offer is untapped and unidentified.”

Jackson was first elected to the county board of supervisors in 2019, unseating longtime member Charles Selmon in a runoff election. Since then, she has proudly been serving Warren County.

Jackson will run against incumbent George Flaggs Jr. who endorsed her just over a year ago for the supervisor’s spot. She is running as a Democrat in the mayoral election and is the only declared Flaggs’ challenger so far. Flaggs is running as an independent.

“If elected the three main goals I want to focus on is small business development, public safety, and community development,” Jackson said. “We have too many resources not to have leadership that can push for those values that can benefit everyone. Our babies deserve the leadership to ensure they can play safely.”

Jackson received her Bachelor of Science from Cornell University’s School of Industrial Labor Relations in 1998, and she serves on the Cornell University board of directors for alumni affairs.

Over her time as District 3 supervisor, Jackson has received support from the community as she has worked on initiatives such as removing the former state flag from county properties, providing food boxes for Vicksburg residents and working on COVID-19 vaccination strategies.

Jackson accomplished a big upset when she unseated Selmon in 2019, and now she will be hitting the campaign trail again on a mission to become the Vicksburg’s next Mayor.

Feb. 5 is the deadline for candidates to qualify for municipal offices. Elections are scheduled for June 8.
