Diver search team will try again to pull vehicle from the Little Sunflower

The Vicksburg Fire Departments Dive Team spent hours in the water on Monday attempting to retrieve a vehicle from the cold waters of the Little Sunflower Canal, where it crosses under 61 North near Floweree Road.
The Vicksburg Daily News spent the afternoon there documenting the event with videos and pictures.
Ward’s Towing was there and worked alongside the Dive Team, FD2, Trey Martin, Sheriff Martin Pace and Deputy Johnny Beauchamp.

Earlier on Monday, a team from ERDC was taking sonar of the canal and recognized the sonar picture as a vehicle. They contacted law enforcement who called in the Dive Team and began the search for the vehicle. The Warren County Sheriff’s boat was in the water and was able to find the vehicle almost immediately. It sat in about 26-28 feet of muddy water. The Dive Team was able to latch onto the vehicles with chains but their line from the tow truck wasn’t long enough to reach the location of the vehicle in the water.
“We will not be able to determine the origin of the vehicle until we can remove it from the canal and run the VIN number,” said Sheriff Martin Pace. “But there was nothing that we observed yesterday that would indicate it had just occurred.”

By the time the team was able to get a secure attachment to the vehicle the sun was going down and divers had been in the 50-degree water for well over an hour. The decision was made to leave the vehicle there for now and return with a long enough line from the tow truck when the weather was more accommodating.
The water was muddy and cold making it difficult to see more than an inch or two in front of you. There is no description of the vehicle and there is no way to know what is inside of the vehicle until it is removed from the waters.
The Vicksburg Daily News will stay with the story and update you as more information becomes available.
