Dr. Julia Letlow, 41, defeated 11 challengers Saturday to capture the Congressional seat for Louisiana’s 5th district. Letlow garnered 63 per cent of the votes cast.

She is the first female Republican from Louisiana to be elected to Congress.

The career educator ran following the untimely death of her husband, Luke, who captured the seat in November 2020. Luke Letlow passed away on December 29, five days before being sworn into office from complications from COVID-19. He was 40.

Luke Letlow had been Chief of Staff for Ralph Abraham who had retired. Julia Letlow announced her candidacy on the popular North Louisiana radio program “The Mighty Mess” on KWCL radio on January 14.

Host Irene Robinson was a long time friend of the Letlow’s and Congressman Abraham. Julia Letlow gathered more financial support than all her competitors combined. She also gathered endorsements from Abraham, Congressmen Steve Scalise, Liz Chaney and former President Donald Trump.

Following her victory Letlow released the following statement.

“This is an incredible moment and it is truly hard to put into words. What was born out of the terrible tragedy of losing my husband, Luke, has become my mission in his honor to carry the torch and serve the good people of Louisiana’s 5th District. I am humbled that you would entrust me with the honor of your vote and the privilege to serve you in Congress. A simple thank you doesn’t fully encapsulate the depth of my gratitude. I will be a servant to the people of this district and be present across the 24 parishes. I will listen more than I speak and seek to find solutions to our region’s challenges. I will partner with those across the country who can help us capitalize on our district’s strengths and bring real results home to you. From tonight forward, I work for you and it is an honor to do so.”

The fifth district encompasses 24 parishes, primarily in North Eastern Louisiana, including Madison, East and West Carroll and Tensas.
