Dual art exhibit opens at Hinds CC

The Marie Hull Gallery on the Raymond Campus of Hinds Community College is currently featuring an exciting exhibit titled “Women of Cherry Street: Recent Paintings by Chatham Kemp and Hannah Wegner.” This exhibit showcases the work of two talented artists and will be open to the public from Feb. 20 to March 22.
The gallery’s hours of operation are Monday through Thursday, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., and Fridays from 8 a.m. to Noon. Please note that the gallery will be closed for spring break from March 13-17.
Chatham Meade Kemp, an Assistant Professor of Art at William Carey University, has been teaching painting and drawing for over 15 years. She received her Bachelor’s of Arts degree from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2004 and her Master’s of Fine Arts degree in painting from Indiana University in Bloomington in 2007. Kemp’s paintings celebrate the expressive power of color and the physical process of layering paint on canvas, and she draws inspiration from the south Mississippi landscape that she calls home.
Hannah Wegner, a painter from Wiggins and a graduate of William Carey University, has been selected for two national-level painting shows in the 2023 Mississippi Invitational show. Wegner’s paintings involve visual play, where skeletal contour marks hover across graphic, modern shapes creating a bold drawing structure. Her work includes a variety of edges, painterly marks, and tension between open and closed shapes.
As a professor and a former student influence each other, the exhibition highlights the artists’ work while showing how the artwork can overlap and differ. This exhibit is a must-see for art lovers in the Hinds area. Come experience the talent and creativity of Kemp and Wegner at the Marie Hull Gallery at Hinds Community College.
