ERDC shooting victim has died, identity released

Justin May, a security guard at ERDC has died as a result of a gunshot wound sustained from a shooting incident at the ERDC main gate earlier Thursday.
Around 11:30 a.m., a call to the 911 center stated there was a gunshot victim at ERDC. Numerous emergency crews responded and found May suffering from a gunshot wound to the head.
Areas around ERDC were blocked off as a precaution and the campus went into lockdown. ERDC employees were asked to shelter in place for a period of time while investigators worked the scene.
Citizens and loved ones grew concerned about the situation. After preliminary investigations, Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones confirmed the situation surrounding the shooting at ERDC was not due to an active shooter.
“We are not working an active shooter,” stated Jones. “We are currently investigating an incident that took place out here but we have it under control at this time.”
May was transported to Merit Health River Region by Fire Medic 80. Weather conditions made air transport to UMMC too dangerous.
May later died at 1:52 p.m. as a result of his wounds.
Information surrounding the details of the incident have not been released at this time. We will continue to provide updates as that information becomes available to us.
