The event is set for 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 30 at the Strand Theatre. The concept is the brainchild of Vicksburg natives Melanie Sanders and Toni Terrett who came up with the idea during a discussion about the recent deaths of opera singer Lucia Hawkins Brown, a Vicksburg native, and singer/actor Harry Belafonte. Both artists were known for performing songs from the early black musicals such as “Porgy and Bess” and “Carmen Jones.”
“The program is a showcase of what was called the Golden Age of American Musicals and the role that black performers played,” said Terrett.
A live band, Element of Art, will provide the accompaniment for the line-up of performers which includes vocalists, a spoken word artist and a dancing demonstration.
“We are so excited to bring this little piece of history to life,” Sanders said. “Our hope is that people come for the entertainment, but gain some knowledge as well.”
Tickets for the event are $20 and can be purchased at www.eventbrite.com. No tickets will be sold onsite.
More information about the performers can be found on the event’s Facebook page and via the Eventbrite link.
