In a major boost for local tourism and sports, The River City has been chosen as the venue for one of the South’s most prestigious fishing events – the Bill Dance Mississippi River Monsters Mega Bucs Pro Series. The premier fishing competition is set to unfold from Aug. 4 to 6.
The tournament has not only made waves in the angling community, but it has also ignited a related event, the Vicksburg Catfish Crawl, scheduled to take place concurrently with the tournament.
The competitive angling commences on Aug. 5 with an optional two-day elimination round. The participants are set to compete for a portion of the hefty $125,000 prize pool, with the crowning jewel being a compelling first prize of $50,000.
The Vicksburg Convention Center (VCC) is fully prepped and ready to host potentially record-breaking weigh-ins, an event that will be open to the public. Vicksburg is set to break new ground by initiating indoor weigh-ins for catfish tournaments, an innovation typically seen only in other fishing tournament types. The weigh-ins are planned to be conducted in the VCC’s exhibition hall, specifically equipped with two roll-up doors to enable smooth entry and exit for the anglers.
Aligning with the tournament’s catch-and-release policy, anglers will drive up to the stage, get their catch weighed, and upon exit, will release the fish into a designated tank.
Running concurrently with the fishing tournament, the inaugural Vicksburg Catfish Crawl is teeming with a diverse range of activities. The event will feature the Vicksburg Restaurant Challenge, where over ten local dining establishments will compete for the best catfish recipe title. Furthermore, the Crawl will offer home tours, live music, and shopping to provide a holistic community experience.
While several of the Catfish Crawl activities were pre-planned, the event now offers a consolidated platform for local businesses and volunteers to unite and support the tournament. This significant event promises to be a vibrant celebration of community solidarity and the exhilarating sport of angling.
