The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for Monday, Aug. 12 for Waren County and Vicksburg along with several other Mississippi Delta cities and counties.

The warning is in effect tomorrow from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. in the following locations:

  • In Mississippi: Bolivar, Sunflower, Leflore, Humphreys, Holmes, Issaquena, Sharkey, Yazoo, and Warren counties, including the cities of Bastrop, Oak Grove, Epps, Lake Providence, Rayville, Delhi, Tallulah, Cleveland, Indianola, Ruleville, Greenwood, Belzoni, Isola, Durant, Tchula, Lexington, Pickens, Goodman, Mayersville, Rolling Fork, Anguilla, Yazoo City and Vicksburg.
  • In Louisiana: Morehouse, West Carroll, East Carroll, Richland and Madison parishes

An Excessive Heat Warning means that a prolonged period of dangerously hot temperatures will occur. Highs will climb into the mid to upper 90s with heat indices from 105 to 110 degrees Sunday and 110 to 115 degrees on Monday.

Dangerous heat stress conditions will continue through Tuesday. Maximum heat index values greater than 110 degrees are expected, especially for locations west of Interstate 55. Heat stroke will become increasingly likely with prolonged outdoor activity.

The combination of hot temperatures and high humidity will combine to create a dangerous situation in which heat illnesses are likely. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke will be more likely if individuals and pets are not adequately cooled and hydrated.

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.
