The COVID-19 pandemic has taken the sports world to an entirely different place since the majority of sports was canceled in March. It has some people wondering if there will be a football season this year.

Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, believes that football may not happen this season.

“Unless players are essentially in a bubble – insulated from the community and they are tested nearly every day – it would be very hard to see how football is able to be played this fall,” Fauci told CNN.

“If there is a second wave, which is certainly a possibility and which would be complicated by the predictable flu season, football may not happen this year.”

Multiple college teams are now in voluntarily training getting ready for the season to start this fall. Since training started, several universities have reported their athletes have tested positive for COVID-19.

Last month, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell informed teams of protocols on how they can reopen their training facilities. Ezekiel Elliott of the Dallas Cowboys is the most recent player in the NFL that has test positive for COVID-19.

College football is currently scheduled to kick off Aug. 29, while the NFL will begin its season Aug. 6.
