Feature-length documentary chronicles F. Dale “Grey Beard” Sanders’ 2,340-mile journey down the Mississippi River
F. Dale “Grey Beard” Sanders’ 2,340-mile-long journey down the Mississippi River has been documented in a feature-length film by Zak Rivers and Wilderness Mindset. The film, which was released on DVD and streaming on Apr. 1, follows Dale as he paddles from the headwaters of the Mississippi River at Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the Gulf of Mexico.
Throughout his journey, Dale reflects on the character-forming events that shaped him into the man he is today, and he shares his philosophy on life that has kept him young at such an old age. His motto, “someday I’ll get old,” is a reminder to live life to the fullest and embrace every opportunity that comes his way.
In addition to his reflections, the film also highlights the nine world records that Dale has set, including the oldest person to paddle the entire Mississippi River. The documentary provides insight into the challenges he faced and the determination he needed to overcome them.
During his journey, Dale and his crew passed through Vicksburg, Mississippi, where they were met by Layne Logue of Quapaw Canoe Company and Paul Ingram, who served as ‘River Angels’ for the group. They provided the paddlers with hospitality by offering lodging and a chance to resupply before resuming their journey. This section of the film showcases the kindness and generosity of people who live along the Mississippi River.
After 87 days, Dale celebrated the end of his 2,340-mile journey from Lake Itasca, Minnesota, to the Gulf of Mexico.
