Fields and Wilson named as VDN Boy’s Track Coach of the Year

Warren Central and St. Aloysius High School track coaches Corey Wilson Sr. and Michael Fields have been selected as the VDN co-coaches of the Year for the boy’s track team.
Both Wilson and Fields were selected because of their successful seasons this year which resulted in runners winning a state title on both teams.
Wilson has been the Vikings head coach for the last five years and has spent that time helping the team make great strides towards success.
Multiple runners advanced to the class 5A North State Meet under Wilson’s leadership, including Joshua Griffin who won 300 intermediate hurdle championship.
Wilson was grateful to receive the award and to see all of his hard work paying off.
“First and foremost, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for putting me in an essential situation,” Wilson said. “However, I can’t thank my parents enough for the sacrifices that they made demanding me to get a quality education. I would also like to thank my wife, and two children for being my number one supporters and motivators in all positions of my life. Finally, I would like to thank Principal Eric Green, Athletic Director Preston Nailor, and Athletic Coordinator Josh Morgan for giving me this enormous opportunity five years ago to continue the winning legacy established by Coach Morris Johnson and Larry Tyrone Sr. back in the hay day.
Therefore, I’m very honored and humbled to receive this distinguished award from the Vicksburg Daily News Sports Team. When I received the phone call from Mr. Keith Phillips earlier today, I immediately thought about my track boys and their adherence to this program. My track guys and I have put in countless hours of hard work and dedication in efforts to keep this program running at a fast and furious pace. This was probably one of the most competitive groups of guys that I have ever coached during my time here at Warren Central; however, I would like to recognize and give honor to them as well. I have also had the honor and privilege of coaching two State Champions in the last past two years Jalen Glass (2019) High Jump and Joshua Griffin (2021) 300 Intermediate Hurdles; subsequently, I truly believe that this program is headed in the right direction for years to come. Finally, I want to thank Mr. Keith Phillips for his hard work, time, and consideration when it comes to getting our athletes confident recognition via social media.”
Fields, who has been a profound leader of the Flashes, led both the girl’s and boy’s team this season where two runner won state titles.
On the boy’s side, Fields has led runner Brennon Williams to multiple championships over the last four years including a 200 and 400 meter championship in 2021.
Fields has always led his athletes to reach their full potential and he was both excited and humbled to have his coaching style be noticed.
“I’m always excited about winning an award because anytime I win an award that lets everyone know that my kids have been respectful and disciplined enough to come together as a team and make the coaches look like they’ve done something to help them because it’s really a team award and we’re always excited about winning team awards” Fields said.
Fields has now been the Flashes track coach since 2015 where many of his athletes have went on to star in college in both football and track.
