Five Warren County inmates are under investigation after a mattress was set ablaze inside of the Warren County Jail.

At around 11:45 a.m., a haze of smoke was noticed by jail staff coming from one of the upstairs cell blocks. Five inmates were located within that area.

Extra deputies were brought in to relocate the inmates to another area of the jail where they were kept under guard.

Sheriff Martin Pace and several deputies investigated the cell block and observed a mattress was on fire. Pace managed to douse the flames with a bucket of water.

Vicksburg Fire Department was notified and arrived on the scene shortly and inspected the area for hot spots.

Sheriff Pace stated the five inmates are under investigation and could face an additional charge. “Five inmates are relocated at this time. They are, all five, under investigation. The person or persons responsible for this should face additional charges.”

The names of the suspects was not released.
