Five Vicksburg High School baseball players Cameron Stamps, Derrick Brown, Datreion Kelly, Tyler Sanders, and Kentrez Bershell all signed to Rust College on Monday to further their playing careers. All five athletes were instrumental in the Gators success over the years as they were well coached by Antonio Calvin.

Third baseman Bershell plans on getting a welding trade as he transitions into college baseball.

“I felt like I could’ve done better this year but I’m happy that my mom won’t have to pay for my college,” Bershell said.

Brown was excited to accept his offer as he saw all of his hard work finally paying off. Brown had one of the highest batting averages in the county.

“I feel like it’s the best school for me and they gave me an opportunity and I’m gonna take it,” Brown said. “ I also want to thank my mom and God for blessing me,” he added.

Sanders, who has family close to Memphis, is thrilled about heading to Rust where he will be closer to them as he pursues a business degree.

“It’s a really good school and baseball team is pretty good and I’m going to continue to play and get a college degree,” Sanders said.

Left fielder Kelly plans on becoming an engineer and will use his baseball talents to help get him through school at Rust.

“I know Rust is a good college and a future and in case baseball doesn’t workout, I will still become a successful young man,” Kelly said.

First baseman Stamps plans to continue his great playing on the next level and he is proud to have earned a shot to prove that he is a great athlete.

“All I am looking for is a chance to play college baseball and to get my education but I also want to thank my family and coaches,”Stamps said.

All five athletes led VHS to this playoffs this season and their school and community is proud to see them get a chance to see them play on the collegiate level.

Vicksburg Daily News will continue to provide updates on each of these young men’s success for the years ahead.
