Vicksburg Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. announced an amphitheater would be in place within three years at the new river front park location which was donated by the Golding Family. Flaggs made the announcement during a Q&A session with Vicksburg Daily News on Monday.

In February, the Golding family graciously donated their property at Oak and Lee Streets for a community park. Boasting one of Vicksburg’s best views of the Mississippi River, the space is meant to replace the former Riverfront Park that was closed due to erosion.

Designs for the park include basic elements as well as some on a grander scale, such as an amphitheater. While both the city and county had budgeted a combined $600,000 to renovate the old park that could be reappropriated to the new property, the citizens council will be tasked with finding additional grants and funding opportunities to realize the project.

“I believe that site that overlooks the real Mississippi River, not the actual canal, we’re going to have an amphitheater there within the next three years,” stated Flaggs.

Flaggs stated the city wants to acquire land from the railroad and some land next to the park to expand about five acres.

“That’s going to be the premiere site to look at the Mississippi River,” stated Flaggs.
