Mayor George Flaggs Jr. began Wednesday morning’s Board of Mayor and Aldermen meeting speaking about Vicksburg Fire Chief Craig Danczyk.

“I still believe in him,” Flaggs said.

“I have done things on my life that if people knew about, I wouldn’t be mayor,” he added. “We live and learn.”

Danczyk came under fire when his comments about people protesting George Floyd’s death became public late last week.

In a Facebook thread May 31, Danczyk wrote, “I got 40 round magazines and (2) AR’s.” In a subsequent comment he wrote, “Protect your families from criminals.”

Even as Flaggs indicated his support for the chief, he emphasized he will be following the letter of the law regarding the investigation and disposition of the incident.

“We’re bigger than that. Were a great city,” Flaggs said, adding, “Let’s turn to each other instead of on each other.”

While the board did not make any decisions about Danczyk, it did pass a proposed bodycam policy for Vicksburg police officers.
