Four Brothers Among Eight Men Killed in Crash
This morning, the Mississippi Highway Patrol released the names of the eight people killed in a horrible crash near Scooba on Monday morning.
Among the eight killed were four brothers: Guillermo Lugo, Francisco Lugo, David Lugo and Luis Lugo. The other four victims were Macario Peregrino, Jose Maldonedo, Arnulfo Martinez and Jose Barrera. All of the deceased lived in Macon, Miss.
According to Kemper County Sheriff James Moore, a box truck and a passenger van hit each other head-on at 3:16 a.m. on Highway 16 just east of Scooba. The crash happened near Lovers Lane Road.
Both drivers survived. The van driver is Alejandro Estrejo Resendiz, also of Macon, and the driver of the truck is Steven McKinney of Goodhope, Ala.
In an interview with the Associated Press on the road shoulder near the crash site, Resendiz said he was transporting a group of workers to Monroeville, Ala., to cut trees. Resendiz said he was in his lane and tried to avoid the truck, but could not.
He added that the crash happened on a curve near a small bridge. The truck reportedly pushed the van backward into the guardrail, where it stopped.
The Mississippi Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
