Gatorettes dance for their teams
When it comes to cheering on a team, cheerleaders are the first thing that pops in people’s mind, but the Gatorettes dance team has also made an impact on Vicksburg Junior High School spirit. The Gatorettes have danced all year for both the football and basketball teams helping to motivate the players to victory.
Rebecca Trawick, a teacher at Vicksburg Junior High, is in her second year coaching these young ladies. To try out for the team, Trawick requires the girls to have at least a 2.5 grade point average, good behavior and a letter of recommendation from a teacher. The Gatorettes must remain on good behavior or they face suspension or possible dismissal from the team.
Trawick, who was born and raised in the Mississippi Delta, has been passionate about dance since she was a youth.
“Dance is a way for exposure,” she said, “and I wish to help my girls receive scholarships in the future.”
Aiji Rader, team captain, has danced for the past eight years and has earned her spot as captain through hard work and dedication.
“Dance keeps me out of trouble and helps me stay focused on what I am passionate on,” Rader said.
Amira Smith, who is co-captain of the team, has been dancing since first grade.
“I love everything about dancing,” Smith said, mentioning that Trawick is a great coach and easy to understand.
The Gatorettes also get to travel to away games this year, unlike last year when they only danced at the home games. Rader said that basketball ball coach Jerdon Hardiman and football coach Larry Carter enjoy the girls motivating their teams.
“I want to be a Gator Girl when I get to high school,” said team member Anitra Calvin.
Trawick has the Gatorettes practice a few times a week to make sure they are game ready and all set for their performance. “We are legendary” is their motto.
“Our Coach inspires us to be the best dancers and best we can be,” said Gatorette Neisha Hardy.
