Vicksburg High School football team’s season ended on Friday in a 14-0 loss to West Point in the North State Championship.

“Our kids played extremely hard all season long including in the losses and tonight we played hard,” VHS Head Coach Todd McDaniel said. Tonight West Point capitalized on some of our mistakes and congrats to them for moving on.”

The Gators started things off rocky with the kickoff return that was fumbled and returned for a Green Wave(11-2) touchdown. The two-point conversion was successful by West Point as they went up 8-0.

As VHS went on offense, they were able to pick up some major yards by Malik Montgomery and Ronnie Alexander who both secured first downs by running the ball well. Montgomery helped VHS get inside the five-yard line after a 14-yard gain but the Gators failed to punch it in and turned the ball over on downs.

WP would try their passing game out but the Gators quickly put an end to that with a interception by Jaleel Fleming.

Johnny Smith helped push VHS down the field on the next drive as he broke out for 23 yards followed by a 30-yard catch by Wally Curry.

The Gators found themselves inside the five-yard line again with 5:33 left in the half but couldn’t get into the end zone.

VHS continued to play great defense by gang tackling the ball carriers and Nick Mickey punished one of the Green Waves shortly before halftime.

WP came out of halftime carrying the ball heavily up the middle and eventually scored on a 13-yard run.

Down 14-0 late in the third quarter, VHS picked up a first down from a good run by Smith along with a pass interference call but wasn’t able to get on the board. As the Gator defense went back onto the field, they quickly forced another punt with the fourth quarter approaching.

Alexander and DeCorey Knight Jr. both picked up some key yards that resulted in first downs on the next drive but VHS wouldn’t be able to secure a score.

Big tackles made by Caleb Bryant, Demarcus Johnson, Mickey and Kellen Washington would keep the Green Wave from scoring for the rest of the game. Smith would get the Gators down the field with a big catch on their final drive but VHS ultimately took the 14-0 loss.

Although their season ended tonight, VHS(10-3) has many things to be proud of this year including a district title and their best season since 2001.

“We’re gonna get back in the weight room and look forward to next year and the goal is to definitely make next season better,” McDaniel said.
