The Geminid meteor shower is one of the most reliable meteor showers of the year, first appearing in the mid-1800s. The event is expected to hit its peak Tuesday, Dec. 13.

The meteor shower occurs yearly, this year between Nov. 19 and Dec. 24. During its peak times, up to 150 meteors per hour can be seen.

The Geminid meteor shower gets its name from the constellation, Gemini. The meteor shower appears from that point in the sky.

The best viewing should be away from city lights, facing south. The last opportunity to see the Geminids will be on Dec. 17.
