Over $22,000 has been raised for Westin Lane Pennington, the son of Vicksburg native Brad Pennington who was killed on Thursday after a vehicle struck his mail truck.

Shortly after his death, a gofundme page was created to go towards education funds for his son. Over 300 have graciously donated.

“We have had many people ask to make monetary contributions and the best way to accept such would be for Westin’s education benefit. All contributions made will be directly deposited into a 529 Plan for Westin,” the family explained. “A 529 Plan is an investment account used to pay for qualified education expenses for a designated beneficiary. It can be used to pay for K- 12 education, as well as college or apprenticeship programs.”

Pennington was at work, delivering mail on Maria Drive in Jackson, when his U.S. Postal Service vehicle was crashed into by 20-year-old Brandon Andrews.  Andrews was being pursued by law enforcement after fleeing an attempted traffic stop in Pearl.

The impact ejected Pennington from the vehicle and broke his neck.

“It was a complete shock that we are still trying to understand,” the family wrote.

Those who were close to him describe Pennington as a wonderful father and provider, and someone who was a blessing to all who knew him, as well as some who didn’t.

Westin’s father was taken from him suddenly and without warning, and some members of the community have decided to pick up the baton and ensure that he is looked after as his father would have wanted.  If you would like to contribute to Westin’s fund, click here.
