The recent circulation of a video capturing the sound of gunfire at Fuzzy Johnson Park has sparked concerns about safety among parents and residents. Vicksburg Police Chief Penny Jones addressed the issue on Thursday, acknowledging the worries and outlining safety measures being taken by the department.

Jones confirmed that she had received the video, which appeared to capture the sound of gunshots coming from the basketball goals at the park.

The gunshots were reported to have occurred on Wednesday, prompting a prompt response from law enforcement officers. Upon arrival at the scene, the officers witnessed the crowd dispersing. Subsequent searches of the area led to the recovery of spent rounds.

Later that evening, units were dispatched to Sky Farm Avenue in reference to a shooting. During the investigation, it was revealed that an argument had taken place, leading Chief Jones to suspect a possible connection between the two incidents.

The alarming footage had raised concerns about the safety of children playing in the area. In response, Chief Jones expressed the department’s commitment to ensuring a safe environment for everyone to enjoy their summer activities.

“We definitely want them to be able to play baseball and enjoy the rest of their summer,” stated Jones.

To address the safety concerns, the Vicksburg Police Department has implemented several measures:

  • The basketball court will be closed from 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. This temporary closure will allow children to play baseball without interference while adults will have to wait until later to use the basketball court.
  • A portable camera will be installed in the area, with an officer stationed nearby.

Jones stated the department has names of potential suspects involved and made an arrest in relation to the Sky Farm incident.
