Have you checked your smoke alarm lately?

Smoke alarms are the first warning signs people may notice if there is a fire.
The Mississippi State Fire Marshal’s Office recommends everyone follow these safety tips when it comes to smoke alarms.
- Test your smoke alarms once a month to ensure they are in working order. The test button may be used to ensure that your alarm is working properly.
- Ensure everyone in the home recognizes the sound of the smoke alarm and has a plan on how to respond.
- Replace all alarms older than 10 years.
- Replace any alarms that do not alarm properly when tested.
- Every sleeping area and common hallway in every level of the home should be equipped with a smoke alarm.
- Large homes may need more alarms.
- The alarms should be mounted to the ceiling or high up on the walls.
- Keep at least 10 feet from the stove to reduce false alarms.
- Make a plan. Everyone in your family should have a plan of action, know escape routes, where to meet and what to do during a fire emergency.
- Never go back into a burning building.
“There were 69 fire deaths in 2020”, stated State Fire Marshal Mike Chaney. “In 41 of those fires, there were no working smoke alarms in the home. If you cannot afford smoke alarms, call your local fire department. they may be able to install alarms for free.”
