Heroes Of The Flood
An unlikely outcome of the Great Backwater Flood has been the friends it created. People whose paths most likely would never have crossed came together to help each other during the flood. Now that the waters are too high to fight, some reflection and thanks have begun.
This team of people includes some inmates. They have been at the lake many days to assist with sandbagging or whatever else was needed. Some of them worked on their last day before being paroled. Fire Chief Earl Wallace, his boss Diane and his Press Secretary Thomas C. Parker made a point to thank these men and to do so with Christian love. The Chief wrote(edited):
“These amazing young men have worked their behinds off for Eagle Lake. Unfortunately, Saturday will probably be their last day to help us. I don’t want to put anyone’s life in danger. Diane and I have come to know and love each and every one of them. They were incarcerated for what the majority of us are guilty of and didn’t get caught or could afford a decent lawyer. Momma, Thomas and I have decided to help them get help to succeed when they are released. Some have already and James worked his last day before parole. We owe these men a debt of gratitude, to say the least. Deputies George and Jake have volunteered each day and weekends to bring them.
Thank you, my new friends,
Earl Wallace
